Within the Project “Days of Spiritual Culture of Russia in Ukraine” there is a Tour of the Famous Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir A lot of songs familiar from childhood like “Evening Bell”, “Along the Piterskaya”, “Roads” and many others in Russian as well as in Ukrainian including Cossacks’ popular songs, will be performed by the world renowned Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir. The ancient spiritual chants deserve special mentioning, they will be sung by 25 brilliant choristers, among which there are students of Sretensky Seminary, as well as graduates of Moscow Theological Seminary and Academy, vocalists from the Moscow Academy of Choir Art, Moscow Conservatoire and the Gnessin State Musical College.
The Choir has its own talented composers and arrangers: Fiodor Stepanov, Alexander Amerkhanov, Andrey Poltorukhin, Roman Maslennikov; first class soloists: Dmitry Beloselsky, Mikhail Miller, Mikhail Turkin, Ivan Skrylnikov, Piotr Gudkov, Alexey Tatarintsev. The choristers represent an obedient instrument in the hands of their precentor, Nikon Zhila, who turns vocal consonance into living organ. Nikon Zhila, a graduate of the Gnessin State Musical College, a son of a priest, singing in choirs of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius since his childhood, headed the Choir in 2005.
The Choir of the Moscow Sretensky Monastery, revived in 1994, started to get its present day characteristic features 10 years ago. Besides regular services in the Monastery the Choir sings at special festival Patriarch's Public Liturgies in the Moscow Kremlin, takes part in international music competitions and missionary tours of the Russian Orthodox Church, records albums and gives a lot of concerts, for these reasons it is considered to be one of the best choirs in Russia and in the whole world.
The tour will take place in five Ukrainian cities, in three of them – Sevastopol, Kiev and Donetsk - the Choir will perform with the soloist of the Mariinsky Theater, laureate of many music competitions, Vladimir Tselebrovsky; besides the Choir will visit Dnepropetrovsk and Kharkov. The concerts will take place on the best stages of Ukraine, and become a real present to all the connoisseurs of choir singing and admirers of the unique vocal art of the Sretensky Monastery Choir: 30 September – Sevastopol, Center of Culture and Arts; 1 October – Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kiev; 2 October – Donetsk Regional Philharmonic; 3 October – Dnepropetrovsk Regional Philharmonic; 4 October – Kharkov Regional Philharmonic.
